It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies.
He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, for whom blood is drunk and flesh eaten. Human blood and human flesh – the stuff of which the Imperium is made.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty fleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds.
Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defense forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. It is a universe you can live today – if you dare – for this is a dark and terrible era where you will find little comfort or hope.
If you want to take part in the adventure then prepare yourself now. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is ONLY WAR. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
Welcome, one and all, to the only game idea I've actually considered running for a long time. In this game the player will take the role of one of the thousands of Imperial guardsmen assaulting the city of Novus, capital city of the planet Ollanius within the Calixis sector. The different positions and specialties available to the player will be outlined roughly as the classes from the FFG Only War system. The game will be narrative driven, however, approximating something like Darko's Space Hulk game except not quite as large a scale.
I already have most of the game planned out so I don't expect this thread to take long to reach its completion...basically its here to let people know that an IG game is in the works, gather up interest in it, and detail how the game will work over a series of posts. I don't expect it to be as intensive as the games currently running as its not going to be run by dice but by narrative and GM events that the player responds to. That being said I don't really expect this game to run for that long either as the story will be rather straightforward. I simply have a desire to run an IG game after having made several planning threads on the old site and then never having actually run a game.
So, if you wanna play go ahead and let me know here. I'll be answering questions and providing more information that will get the players up to speed on how everything will play out...if all goes well then this game should be running within the next few days.

The city of Novus, the planet of Ollanius, The Spinward Front and the Severan Dominate:
The planet of Ollanius is a thriving Imperial world within the Periphery subsector of the Calixis sector. It was conquered a thousand years before present events much like the rest of the Calixis sector by Lord Militant Golgenna Angevin in the Angevin crusade. The world was conquered by Imperial forces, stamping out the former regime which had ruled the world as part of an oligarchy made up of the rulers of Ollanius and the other nearby systems. Angevin was successfully able to convince some of the systems in the oligarchy to side with the Imperials during that sweep of the crusade and the rest of the coalition swiftly fell afterwards. The capital city which would come to be called Novus after the final victory on the surface of the planet was conquered and all enemy armies surrendered on Angevin's fifty sixth birthday. He was reported to have said to his personal confessor "The Emperor surely loves his Imperial Guard but none could love them so much as I." Lord Angevin then declared a day of victory and christened the planet Ollanius after the patron saint of his beloved Imperial Guard.
In recent times, the planet Ollanius has suffered from hardship. The recent ravages of WAAAGH Grimtoof in the Periphery sub sector have caused years of famine on the planet's surface as its imports have nearly dried up. The planet's rulers have had no choice but to seek other unconventional and sometimes shady business partners to keep the planet's economy afloat. All of this has been met with what the population considers to be an uncaring and ungrateful Imperium whose tithes only get higher every year as the Spinward Front grinds on in an attempt to expel both xenos and traitor from Imperial space. The world borders the newly forged Severan Dominate; an entity created out of a coalition of worlds now ruled by a powerful noble named Severus XIII who has declared his domain autonomous from the Imperium of Man. Six months before current events the Imperial leadership on Ollanius was overthrown in a coup which took the world by storm. Demagouges and anti Imperials came out of hiding as this coup happened and stirred up the people in favor of the coup. Though the Imperial forces on the planet called for aid against a superior foe, their call went unanswered. The Front was at that time still trying to secure a salient into ork held space and Imperial forces in the area were deemed too thin to attempt to aid the planet. Eventually the entire world fell to the rebels and the Imperial High command could only watch in horror as ships from the Severan Dominate poured into the system and disgorged an army to hold this world.
High Command finally understood that the rebellion had been a ploy by the Dominate to expand its border so as to threaten Imperial supply lines and drive a wedge into their new salient. If they were allowed to advance any further, the salient would be completely cut off from the rest of the front. The Lords Militant resolved that this must not happen for the sake of the front.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so the Spinward Front's command gave the task of retaking Ollanius in the name of the Emperor to Lord General Teliphan Aurelius Oximar, known affectionately by his troops as "Ol' Ironblood." Amongst the Front's general staff, Oximar is well respected and well aged as a commander entering his second century of Imperial service. He is well known as a stalwart and dependable commander; calm and collected in times of crisis and possessing a mind shaped for strategy. He is considered one of the Front's "old warhorses" and continues to show his value to the Imperium he so loves even as younger men surpass him in rank.
Though his orders to retake Ollanius were urgent, General Oxmiar was forced to wait nearly six months to accumulate the force he would need to retake the planet. The Imperial line was still thin and reinforcements were slow coming to his part of the front. Eventually, however, he was able acquire the force he needed though he feared that the delay would enable the Severan defenders ample time to prepare a defense. Despite these worries, he had no choice but to press on. He gathered his command staff and his allies in the Imperial Navy, Mechanicus, Munitorum, and other Imperial branches and sailed with a fleet through the warp to Ollanius. His first action was to sweep away the few Severan naval assets from the system. They were quick to fall or flee but the fleet took heavier casualties than would be liked because of the planet's orbital defense batteries. Regardless, Ol' Ironblood forged on as his troops knew he would and nearly a thousand years to the day that Lord Militant Angevin conquered Ollanius for the Imperium, Lord General Oximar launched his own assault to bring the planet back under Imperial rule.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The battle on the surface of Ollanius raged for three months of planet wide conflict. Regiments of the Imperial Guard fought to conquer the enemy's defenses while the Navy worked to establish air superiority in the skies above the planet. Though the Severan air forces were quick to fall, their ground forces were more stubborn than most of the Imperial forces would have given them credit for originally. In addition to the Severan traitor guard forces that landed on the planet to support the rebellious regime that took control of Ollanius the planet's PDF and civilian population are decidedly and staunchly anti Imperial. The Guard as well as their allies have had to deal with not only a heavily entrenched conventional enemy that is highly motivated and well equipped but have also faced the challenge of separating civilians from anti Imperial insurgents who show up amongst their midst.
Despite the defenders' best efforts and heavy Imperial casualties, Ol' Ironblood's army clawed their way all over Ollanius' service, claiming every major city and most of the major settlements before closing in on the planetary capital of Novus.
Novus is the largest city on the face of Ollanius being home to much of the planet's bureaucratic infrastructure and many of the world's more well known buildings and historical monuments. The Severan troops and command have turned the city into a fortress. Every building is a redoubt, every window a sniper nest or weapon port. The Imperial attackers have learned over the course of three months of continuous combat that there is no underhanded tactic, no trick or perfidy that the defenders will not stoop to. As a result, Oximar and the Imperial Guardsmen under his command have steeled themselves for one last tough fight against their traitorous counterparts.

The Severan Dominate is a secessionist Human empire under the personal control of Severus XIII. Originally consisting of worlds Severus acquired in the Periphery Sub-Sector of the Calixis Sector with the help of Dark Eldar, when the region began to plunge into chaos during the Spinward Front wars, Severus announced his annexation of the worlds under his influence into a private fiefdom. Beset on all sides by Imperial Troops, Orks, Dark Eldar, and Chaos forces, the The Severan Dominate somehow continues to withstand them all, if only tenuously. Thanks to Severus' many agents and orators, its populations still rally to the cause of their despotic master and willingly renounce the rule of the Imperium. Militarily, the Dominate maintains a small but capable army of mainly PDF troops, local Imperial Guard regiments and all manner of human and xenos mercenaries.
"God-Emperor save us from your false servants and lead our revolution to glory for your name!"
The average Severan soldier is a model imperial citizen in all but one aspect. Though they are just as devout to the Imperial creed as their Imperial aligned counterparts, they reject the authority of the High lords of Terra and believe that by following their leader Severus XIII they can bring about a revolution that will spread across the Imperium and bring about the overthrowing of the Imperial regime in order rid the empire of the "false servants" and bring about a new age of man where the true sons and daughters of the Imperium would make the Imperium greater in the name of the Emperor. Among the Severan troops that fight for Novus there are troops from the XII Ohmsworld Spireguard, the honorbound Caravasse Leigesworn, and the infamous Kulth LVII known as the "Kulth Butchers."

The nature of Krieg regiments is such that little more is necessary. For the most part, interregimental communications are handled by the 226th’s current senior Commissar, Anton Kraevan.

His fervour for the glory of battle has seen the Elysian 44th deployed to the deadliest of conflicts and the most challenging of missions, succeeding at any cost, and to great acclaim. The Starhawks have suffered great casualties over the years, and only a dozen of companies of their original ten thousand warriors still remain, though each is a veteran of many battles. Only on one occasion have the Starhawks been reinforced with the remnants of another regiment. After the failed invasion of Avitohol, they bolsteed their diminishing numbers with the remains of the Elysian 227th Drop Troops, though subsequent campaigns have reduced their numbers further.

His warriors, true to the traditions of the Iron Guard, obey his every command without question and without hesitation, and trust absolutely in the chain of command that links him to each and every man in the regiment, from the keen-eyed gunner of Tanz’s own Leman Russ Vanquisher, Iron Spear, to the lowliest menial responsible for the cleaning, refuelling and simple maintenance of the vehicles between battles.
Regiment Type: Armoured Regiment; Equipped with Leman Russ battle tank variants for armored warfare. Usually equipped with scout vehicles like Salamanders and Sentinels as well as a company or two of mechanized infantry to support the tanks.

Vostroyan 55th Grenadier Regiment
Home World: Imperial World
Commanding Officer: Choleric
The regiment’s commander, Nikolai Aleksandrov, is well regarded by the other officers in his regiment, not purely because of his rank, but because he is a distant cousin of one of the ruling Techtriarchs of Vostroya, and thus an extremely important member of the nobility. The rank-and file have little to no interest in this, and most are entirely unaware of his high status, but respect the man’s leadership and prowess—there is little that Colonel Aleksandrov will ask of his men in battle that he will not do himself, and he is always found at the front, leading the charge or exhorting his men with bellowed warcries.
Regiment Type: Grenadiers; Equipped to be heavy infantry with carapace armor and assault weapons. Valhallan 442nd Rifles
Home World: Imperial World
Commanding Officer: Melancholic
The 442nd is lead by the pragmatic and sullen General Hovar Rusk whose reputation for stalwart stubborness and irrascible disposition are well known throughout the army corps. Though seen by his contemporaries as a well rounded man, in battlefield situations he tends to be both introspective and pessimistic, sometimes leaving his troops to use their own initiative. This seems to have worked for him over the years, however, as the honor roll for the 442nd could fill volumes over its long years of service to the Emperor
Regiment Type: Line Infantry; Equipped with large formations of infantry that are both flexible and mobile. Usually supported by regimental artillery support in some shape or form. Trained for defensive maneuvers as well
Doctrines: Favoured Foe (Orks), Survivalists (Tundra), Die Hards

Dengar 28th "Suicide Kings"

Commanding Officer: Choleric
Rough hewn and always ready for a fight, the Dengar 27th are led by hard bitten Colonel Raegar Greef. The colonel raised the "Suicide Kings", given their nickname by a bad hand in a popular card game, on his home world of Dengar, a world with little material value where criminals from every corner of the imperium are brought to be dumped for the rest of their miserable lives. With him the Suicide Kings have gone to hell and back, their status as undesireables meaning that they are often given tough assignments that regiments of their stature would not normally recieve.
Regiment Type: Guerrilla Regiment; Equipped and trained for unconventional warfare, ambushes, raids, and other forms of swift attacks. Usually equipped with stealth gear and light armor as well as close combat weapons and explosives to be used as traps.
Doctrines: Close-Quarters Battle, Infiltrators, Scavengers
------------------------------------------------------------------
Necromundan 7th "Lucky Sevens"
Home World: Hive World
Commanding Officer: Maverick
The Lucky Sevens are led by Colonel Jessey "Shorty" Karinda; a volatile woman with a mean streak as long as she is diminutive. Having long before led a gang in one of Necromunda's many underhives, Karinda has a knack for urban combat seldom seen outside of those who have grown up on hive worlds. Always seen in the rank and file trooper's armor and often leading from the front, her contemporaries have come to respect her and her regiment's gusto even if she might not always be a team player.
Regiment Type: Hunter Killer; Equipped for rapid assaults with overwhelming force, usually equipped with weapons to do the maximum amount of damage or put the maximum amount of rounds downrange. Often equipped with assault vehicles like Sentinel walkers and Hellhound tanks.
Doctrines: Close-Quarters Battle, Scavengers

The 69th is led by the doom driven Colonel Borus Sisk. Convinced by years of battle against the Emperor's foes that his fate is to die on the field of glory, Sisk drives his regiment into the fires of chaos, waiting for their time to be destroyed and added to the honor rolls of the Steel Legion.
Regiment Type: Armoured Regiment; Equipped with Leman Russ battle tank variants for armored warfare. Usually equipped with scout vehicles like Salamanders and Sentinels as well as a company or two of mechanized infantry to support the tanks.

Usually use shock trooper tactics in battle and often can be found closing the gap with the enemy quickly to finish them off in hand to hand. Units are known for rarely retreating and holding their ground inexorably.
Doctrines: Hardened Fighters, Die Hards

Home World: Penal Colony

Armageddon 69th "Ironhearts" Armored
Home World: Hive World
Commanding Officer: Maverick
The 69th is led by the doom driven Colonel Borus Sisk. Convinced by years of battle against the Emperor's foes that his fate is to die on the field of glory, Sisk drives his regiment into the fires of chaos, waiting for their time to be destroyed and added to the honor rolls of the Steel Legion.
Regiment Type: Armoured Regiment; Equipped with Leman Russ battle tank variants for armored warfare. Usually equipped with scout vehicles like Salamanders and Sentinels as well as a company or two of mechanized infantry to support the tanks.
Doctrines: Anti Armor, Well Provisioned
