Liberation of Lastraata
In the closing years of the 40th millennium Lastraata was a manufacturing planet vital to the production and export of vehicles, small arms, and refined promethium to the Imperium’s warzones in the surrounding sectors. So when it fell to the forces of Chaos in 998.m40 its recapture was one of the Imperium’s top priorities.
Millions of guardsmen were deployed to the planet as well as thousands of aircraft from the Imperial Navy Aeronautica to support their advance. But their enemy was dug in deep with Lastraata’s immense manufacturing capabilities twisted to fit their purpose. When it became clear the war could not be won without first eliminating the precious manufactorums, Commanders committed their aircraft en-masse in an attempt to cripple enemy production centres.
Proportionally speaking, the air war was magnitudes of times more vicious than the war on the ground. Fighter pilots on both sides quickly became famous as they racked up kills in the flak-strewn clouds while lumbering Marauders delivered thousands of tons of high explosives in massive raids. At its worst point the average lifespan for a pilot stationed on Lastraata was one sortie. Only the best pilots survived to fight another day.
Lastraata’s most famous ace was Group Captain Jack “Black Jack” Hewlet, an Imperial Thunderbolt pilot with nearly five hundred confirmed kills to his name. His distinctive jet-black thunderbolt with an elaborate death’s head motif emblazoned on the fuselage struck fear into his opponents and emboldened his subordinates to heights of bravery. Unfortunately he was killed in the closing days of the conflict by flak while escorting Marauders on a strike against a munitions depot.
After seven years of constant warfare, Lastraata was considered liberated by Imperial commanders. But the cost was high. Most of the aircraft deployed had been shot down and millions of Imperial Guardsmen now rested in shallow graves. Most of the critical manufacturing centres, the entire reason behind the Imperial war effort, had been destroyed or damaged out of necessity. But damage could be repaired, although it would take centuries to do so, and a vital resource center had been captured before it could truly fall into the hands of Chaos. To the Imperium, this justified the scores of dead.
