Freya took a large bite out of the pancake, sweetened with a healthy dose of marmalade. The newsman talked about the recent affairs in the world as her mother softly sang along with the radio. Cooking a new batch of pancakes. Freya yawned as she stretched her slender upper body. Freya was one of the happy few that could eat the greasiest meals and never gain a pound. Something that her mother was incredibly jealous about. Her fathers genes. Not that she knew the man, he had left her mother, when she was just two years old.
“I’ve got some more.” She softly sang as she walked in with a fresh batch. Her mother was dressed in a bright green dress covered up by a plethora of birds. Her dark brown hair hanging loose. Her mother never really got rid of her Hippie past. “Thanks, mom.” Freya said uninterested as she grabbed a new one. “It’s going to be a beautiful day.” Mom said as she looked at the weather rapport. “Yea, always makes me happy.” Freya replied, interrupted with a heavy sneeze. “Don’t worry, Freya its only a month and then its over. “I hate spring.” She mumbled as she wiped her nose. “It comes back every year.” “Hey now, don’t be mad a mother nature, she’s a beautiful thing.” Her mother said which resulted in a heavy sigh from Freya. “So what are the plans today?” mother said, trying to keep the conversation going.
“School stuff, got to finish that damn motherboard for the robot.” “What is its name?” Freya frowned. “It’s a school project, it doesn’t need a name.” “Why not Rob, Rob the robot.” Her mother continued ignoring her attempt to shut the conversation down. “Why not ask Andrew if that’s a good name?” she said with a wink. Freya groaned at her mothers new attempt to couple her to Andrew. “Mom, he’s just a friend. Leave it alone.” “That wasn’t my question.” Her mother answered, although even she knew the intent of the previous question. “Sure, I’ll ask.” She said, trying to drop the argument. “Maybe I need some Illumn.” She said as she pointed at the commercial. Illumn: be allergy free.
Her mother was a born herbalist. Freya had never touched a pill since her birth. Every cold or cough was fought with herbal essences and other spices. Her reply immediately sparked a speech from her mom, that medicine was pure poison, and more. Freya happily devoured the last pancakes as her mothers stream of wisdom continued. “Besides, Illumn is banned in Europe. Because it violates some health laws.” “Don’t worry mom, I’ll just never get sick. Then there won’t be a problem.” And with a big kiss, she threw her backpack on her shoulders. “text me when you’re going home.” Her mother yelled as she slammed the front door down.
With a small jog she made it to the bus stop just in time for her ride. The busman nodded as she flipped him her bus subscription. She nodded to the fat guy who always sat in the back. For two years of college they had shared this bus ride every morning, yet they never spoke to each other. The only recognition of their existence was the little nod in the morning. The bus followed its path through town, each stop resulting in more passengers. Freya excused herself as she sneezed on someone shirt. Stupid allergies. As if the big red nose wasn’t bad enough. The bus discarded its passengers in front of the campus. Freya pulled out her sunglasses as the sun started to awaken, bathing the campus in its holy light.
She quickly made her way to block A, trying to hold in as many sneezes as possible. “I’ll kill the guy, who thought that planting an entire school orchard was a bright idea.” She mumbled, while dodging a Frisbee gliding through the air. “hey Frey, glad you’re here.” Andrew waved her through the aula. “give me a sec.” she yelled as she made her way through the room. There was place for two hundred students, but only some twenty odd spots were filled. Philosophy wasn’t everyone’s most favorite course. Especially in this weather. Freya dropped herself in the chair next to Andrew. Andrew was a guy that wasn’t that easy to forget. Not because he was very charismatic, or handsome. But because of his burning ginger hair, complete with the obligatory freckles. “What’s up?” she asked while pulling her laptop out. He handed her a flyer, neo-green battled with a glossy black.
“My house is giving a party tonight. Do you want to come?” If Freya’s mom where here she would explode out of happiness. “Oh come one, it will be fun.” The twins said in sync. “Eric, the quarterback is going to be Dj, so the music will be awesome. And not to mention all the cute boys” she said with a naughty wink. “You know I don’t like parties, hell … I don’t even like big crowds.” She replied. “Besides I still got to build Rob.” “Rob?” “That’s the name of robot.” Andrew grinned, as the name rolled several times over his lips. “Rob the robot, he will steal all other robots blind.” “Whatever.” She replied as she opened her notes. “I will think about it, ok?” Freya dumped the flyer in her backpack. Andrew just raised his shoulders in reply. They both knew she wouldn’t come. The backdoor opened revealing an eldery man slowly making its way down. “Who’s that?” she whispered. “Dunno.” Andrew said as he checked his phone. The man walked down to the chalkboard, where he wrote down in big letters: Class dismissed. “I woke up this early, for this?” Andrew complained as he dumped his laptop in his backpack. “I still could be sleeping.” “we’re going to the cafeteria” the twins stated as they stood up. “You guys coming?” “I’ll walk along but I’ll head to Block C. going to work a bit more on Rob.”
The moment they left Block A Frey immediately regretted going outside. Three short sneezes. “Gesundheit.” Andrew replied. “I hate spring.” She sobbed. “Well that’s nature for you.” “Hey why don’t you have a Rudolph nose.” She asked. She suddenly remembered last year, that Andrew had it even worse the her. Yet here he stood, as healthy as a fish. “Oh yeah, I forgot that this is the allergy season.” “You forgot?” Freya exclaimed. “Spring is season of agony, and you forgot?” “Well, yea. I didn’t have any problems since I started using this.” He held up a small yellow box. Illumn. “It really helps.” He popped a capsule and handed over a yellow pill. “They studied like allergy-genes and found something that neuters that gen. If you take it for like a month, you should be fine for an entire year.” “That sounds like poison.” Freya replied. She sounded like her mother. “Yea, it will probably give you cancer, but hey I can be a normal person in spring.” Freya studied the little pill. It weight nothing, a small black serial number was printed on the side. She would do anything to get rid of the allergie. She could hear her mothers speech from this morning echoing through her mind as she swallowed the pill. “Lets see if it works.”
