Had this idea in the spur of the moment, something of an ongoing project now. I can't say whether I'll update it too regularly.
Anyway, to the purpose of this thread: I'm going to revisit some of my oldest characters and try to make them really good. Plus, nostalgia and writing practice never hurts.
For this, we're going to have to go way back to the place I went just after where it all started, as we never go back to where it all began. Oh no, that'd just be sacrilege.
And yes, this does mean we'll be taking a trip down memory lane - and you know what that means - laughing at young Darko who liked to write LOL and XD a lot. Hard to believe, I know. To think, people thought I was 25 back then. I suppose that illusion was shattered as soon as I spoke to them...
A few I'll be working on most likely:
Shadow - the notorious, gary stu, almost unbeatable and somewhat eccentric elite of the elite spec ops type agent. He featured prominently in the second game (to this day, one of the best RPs I have ever had the pleasure of partaking in, I highly recommend giving it a full read) of what is known to myself and some others as the zombie series. He wasn't in the first game but was heavily based off the character I created for that but subsequently didn't really get to play, whose name was Spook I believe. Go figure.
Shadow did appear in Russians, Zombies and Large Weapon Caches (RZ&LWC) - the third instalment and my first big shot at GMing that was good for awhile but inevitably didn't work out as I had no idea what I was doing at the time. While I wasn't very good at weaving a story everyone was having fun IC, for the most part. But OOC things got tense, everyone started arguing and I stood up for the one guy who everyone didn't like - when I should have just booted him instead of saving his skin over and over. It did make for a very good IC rivalry though, especially late game.
Not to worry folks, I have since learned to not put up with people's bullshit! All is well.
Finally, Shadow made an appearance in the fifth zombie game - Afternoon of the Dead - which was sadly lost in its entirety with the rest of the site. He made a brief cameo at the very end in the final post of the character I was using in that game. I really am sad to have lost that game, way more than most, simply because it was the second best instalment out of all five, and one of only three to ever complete. I suppose it was also technically the end of a sub-trilogy, as only the second, third and fifth games were directly related with characters or plot lines crossing over. My character in that game was also very good in his own right, I believe his name was Kain something or other and he made quite a remarkable journey over the course of the story. Sadly, that's all gone and I don't have it in me to re-write it.
Or do I? We'll see, I suppose. But losing it all really takes away the motivation of continuing lost characters.
Moving on, we reach my first real 40k character: Arkus Pallemon. He was an outcast Blood Angel (I read a lot of graphic novels like Bloodquest back then) who found himself in the middle of a War of Attrition - although he doesn't show up for a few pages as I was late to join - and despite everything, I can still say I'm proud of that character to this day. I actually managed to create an interesting Space Marine (or at least, he was in my opinion). The game died off more or less but it did come to a very satisfying conclusion, which by the end was carried by myself and one other person. It was all very awesome, if I do say so myself, and, well, just go and read it if you have the time. Again, well worth the read (or maybe I'm just too nostalgic?).
----
Anyway, those are the two I will be attempting to improve, likely by continuing their story in some fashion and generally adding a lot more depth. Stay tuned, or don't, although any 'old timers' from back in the day may be interested in this, possibly even having been in a few of the games mentioned (and more that I may feature in the future).
Until then, I do have all sorts of other things to attend to like an info dump for my upcoming fantasy game. I will at least get those two characters done in this project though, that's for sure.
halonachos - you may have an interest in this thread, I think you're the only one from back then who is still around with any regularity. I do miss Silver, though he was never too active even on the old site. Gah, there I go rambling...
Oh! Honourable mention to Nachos now that I think about it, he did do a wonderful parody of Shadow, not all of which is lost - it has its basis in posts that took place in RZ&LWC that quite rightly poked fun at my most over the top character of all time.
Damn it, now I'm going to have to re-read the old but gold games. I blame you, Halon.
