Azarael, the Black Seraph -
Long before the race of Man was ever a notion, Azarael (Azz-ZAR-ee-EL) was the angel of shadows and war, charged with defending the realm of the seraphs from all danger, collateral, intentional or otherwise. For eons did he lead the angel armies in defense of his people, but many ages of warfare left him broken and shattered in spirt. Azarael's Fall came about when he interrogated a Grand Duchess of Hell, Aerith. During the torture Aerith revealed that she had discovered the secret to controlling the shadows of mortals and was in the process of building a private army to take over her area of Hell. Upon learning this Azarael's immortal life changed forever. He promised her release if Aerith but teach him the art of Shadow Magic. He thought it a quaint term as it was not magic at all, but he was content to allow the ignoramous to rant. After mastering the skill, Azarael smote her wear she stood and burned her corpse and began to put his skill in to use. He took the title "Angel of Shadows and War" and conscripted the stolen Shadows of his fellows into HEaven's army. When his superiors learned of this they strode into his quarters, their many blazing wings incinerating the Shadows and stripping Azarael of his powers. He refused to lie down and fought back with blade and razore-sharp feathers, slaying many kinsmen before finally being defeated in combat by the Archangel Dural (Dur-AL), his angelblade shattered into ten thousand pieces and scattered over the whole of time and space. Azarael was cast out from their realm, his life spared, and banished to the lands of demons alongside the other fallen. He hadf his natural, God-given abilities stripped from him. No more could he slay demons and other creatures of the darkness with his touch. No longer would he be able to walk among men as one of them. His form would not burn the eyes of those who looked upon him. He would be seen as a mortal man, eternally young and strong. Only his pinions, huge, feathered and disturbingly beautiful would distinguish him.
Azarael spent eons being tortured, chained to a rock in the 9th Circle of Hell, suffering tortures that don't even exist in this language. Every day, every hour, every instant of his life for a lifetime, and then some. After the first couple hundred centuries he began to give up, and the pain barely a annoyance anymore. Then his rage returned as he saw humans being dragged screaming from the world above. As much as he despised humans, he hated demons more. Breaking free of his bonds he slew his demonic captors and returned the would-be dead souls to the top world, where he slew them as well, staying just long enough to ensure they went to Heaven where they belonged. He escaped the demon lands and offered his services to the Overlord, to destroy those his former brethren have sworn protection to. The lifetime of burning agony and torure has left him a cold and detached being, underneath which lies a malice so fierce it is said to stand near him too long is to bring about certain death. His only goal is to decimate the realm of man and leave it a barren husk, and Azarael is determined to make the extermination of humans quick, but agonisingly so.
Azarael fights alone when possible, but should his master decree otherwise, he makes a powerful asset to any follower of evil. Although not in full command of what he once had, Azarael’s skin is as hard as iron, and is stronger than most humans. His feathers are razor sharp, and can be used as projectiles and as weapons in melee, using the leading edge of his wings as blades. They are also strong as steel and can be used to defned himself as well. His strength and speed negates the need for a true weapon, but should the need arise Azarael is proficient in all manners of weaponry. he goes to battle with only his lower body clothed, and armourless entirely, as it would only encumber him.
As well as unmatched hatred for humans, Azarael, as he is still, in all respects, an angel, has a disdain for demons and other creatures of evil that cannot be erased, they are part of his very existence. That said, over the years he has learned to tolerate the company of many of those that he would not allow to live if he had not fallen. Vampires, werewolves, spirits to name a few. However, his feelings towards demons are practicvally unchanged, and unless they prove useful to his plans, or (Overlord) commands otherwise, he usually destroys them on sight.
Azarael's resilience is unmatched, able to endure torture not many can even comprehend, or speak of, without dying from the sheer scale of depravity. In addition, as an angel, he is possessed of a formidable strength, enough to snap necks and rupture organs with little in the way of effort resistance, as well as feathers of impenetrable resilience, allowing them to be used as shields to all but the most powerful or accurate of attacks, as well as use their razor-sharp edges as blades. Azarael is capable of flying at speeds that leave Wyverns in his trails, only true Dragons able to match him for sheer speed. His eyes possess 3 optical nerves giving him much greater eyesight than mortals, and his ears can pick up sounds only the wolves and animals can hear. His will is unyielding, determined to decimate all of Human and Angel-kind.
Azarael's minion henchmen are the captured Shadows of humans, elves and dwarves. They appear identical to their original persona, except for their yellow, glowing eyes, and that they are darker than dark, as if their existence swallows all light that touches them. Able to appear as this blackened soul or as a Shadow on the wall, in this form they are able to pass in their own dimension, and slip through cracks under doors and windows, thnner than air and lighter than feathers. They make excellent assassins, able to slip past defences like, well, Shadows, and murder their target without them even realising, as they turn to look for the Shadow's long deceased owner. Shadows do not even have to attack their victim directly. While in their two-dimensional state they can attack their target's Shadow and by murdering the Shadow, the same effect occurs to their host.
Shadow's have weaknesses depite their strengths. Primarily, they cannot pass through direct light, whether from a candle or the moon, without unimaginable agony wracking their forms. Sunlight will destroy them instantly, making them useless in the daylight.
Occasionally, Shadows can be possessed by Demons, the abomination resulting as a Shadow Demon. Humanoid with black, leathery skin and enormous pairs of bat-like wings twenty-feet wide, Shaodw Demons are immune to most of the weaknesses of both their parts. Candlelight is not even a tickle to their skin and sunlight no more painful than a wasp. Shadow Demons are immensely powerful and Azarael's two, Balthometh and Rohm, are his lieutenants. Able to rip a man in half with their bare claws, and use natural shadows as a teleportation system, able to transverse from one point of darkness to another in seconds or minutes, makes their formidable opponents. Few things are able to hurt them. Silver is one, magic another. The Demon can be exorcised as any other possession, and the touch of a Holy Angel will Smite them, burning their blackened souls to ashes. Shadow Demons are terrifying to behold, and few escape their wrath alive, let alone unscathed.
The Shadows; biggest weakness comes not from them but from their master. Shadows are completely enslaved to Azarael and possess no free will of their own, and their capture takes a large toll of the Fallen Angel, and so their numbers are few.
