For a scenario say, involving 100 soldiers on each side that I'm working out. Dice are not an issue. This is a draft of one of the mechanics of a game ruleset I'm making for a future game.
Player A is raiding player B's territorry, posting about it IC and what have you.
Player B sets out to put a stop to him and comes across him in an orchard his men are burning down. The sides advance and the various troop types parcel out to do their strategy. (Each soldier in a single unit has the same weapon, armor and gear. Example. 2 small formations, one of men at arms and one of levies hit a larger formation of spearmen. One on one half of it's line, the other on the other half.
The fight: This is where two formations make contact. The die are rolled and appointed to random soldiers en mass. If they roll below their weapons skill and an enemy’s shield doesn't take the blow (shields add modifiers, lowering an enemy's weapon skill by however many the sheild stats says) they get past the parrying and hit. Then comes the wounding stage, where men who are hit who wear armor are more likely to survive. The die are rolled again. If the enemy rolls higher than the enemy armor value (adding their penetration value to that roll) they pierce it, wounding the man. The result is fairly simple after that. The die are rolled for damage, and if the result is lower than the weapon’s damage value, the man is considered killed outright, otherwise he is only wounded and is lying on the ground groaning. After the battle, unless he is taken to a chirurgeon during, another die is rolled with a half chance of any wounded dying, the rest remain wounded for about a week, and unless seen to by the chirurgeon and stabilized, have the die rolled for them each day with decreasing chances to perish as they linger.
