The year was 607 AR in the Iron Kingdoms. It started as a rumour, circling the taverns on shattered Llael, disregarded by many as a tale both frivolous and fanciful, made up by some soldier in his cups to impress others. However, some took note, those with some knowledge and the ability to seize upon its importance. As the rumour died out in the bars and brothels it began to grow and thrive amongst the intelligencers placed in that war torn land. It was quickly passed up the chains of command until it was brought to the attention of those who would choose how to act upon it, and decide whether it was a fabrication or fact.
This rumour spoke of a weapon, some relic of ancient times that had been uncovered on the fringes of the Bloodstone Desert. The details were vague, but enough of the rumours agreed on a few key points to make it credible: the weapon was some kind of spear and it was ensorcelled with some form of magic that allowed it to channel light into a devastating beam. Many of the nations soon came to realise what had been discovered, through research in books, or from ancient legend passed down from generation to generation – the Dawnspear, a relic long thought destroyed. The factions quickly decided they must seize the item for themselves, in the hopes that they could use it to gain an advantage over their opponents. Wary of alerting others to their discovery each sent a small task force to recover the weapons, small enough not to raise suspicion as anything more than a border patrol, but enough to secure the weapon. Warcasters from the nations fired up their warjacks, and warlocks slipped silently through the night with their beasts, all intent on securing the weapon for their nation, or themselves.
Thus the stage was set for a war in the shadows, to bring back the light of the Dawnspear.
