Milo heeded the words of Iulius and far be it from him from turning down a free meal. Sure enough didn't look like deer though but whatever it was there was always a first time for everything. Milo ate it while the others began discussing other matters, such as the Wolf's name, the poor man must have been so famished to tear into two bowls of the stuff. Then came the topic of the prisoner, Iulius answered the question as to what to do with the man as much as he expected someone from the Legion to.
"But, crucifixion seems a tad harsh for a man who's only real damage was keeping us awake last night. Yes we should find out what he knows, but maybe afterwards we should allow the man to redeem himself. His brother died in that fight, his family name was besmirched so he should have the ability to redeem it's honor. What better way to do so than by serving this small community?" Milo said with a glimmer of hope in his eyes, he always felt happier after saying something remotely preachy. Reminding himself of his own faith always brought joy to his heart, it had been a long journey but it was a rewarding one.
"But that's just my idea." Milo finished as he returned to his meal. He was somewhat concerned with how that Wolf fellow was acting, but there was a world of different customs out in the world.

She who walks with Thunder kept out of the talk and banter of the "civilized"folk her attention was on the new arrival, but not for his eating habits or his silence, but because of his name and how he moved. They called him Wolf, which surprised and confused her, most folk were idiots when it came to naming each other, yet this one had a ring of truth to it and wasn't just meaningless noise. It was also wrong, in almost as many ways as the ones the companions she already knew were, most wolves weren't this savage, this twitchy and he was obviously not a wolf. She who walks with Thunder was at a loss to what his name could actually be, and it seemed he was not going to provide one, so reluctantly turned her attention away and focused on devising a Battle cant that would allow the party to quickly alert her and not be civilized insensitive brutes about it. She ate her food carefully as to not waste any of it, although she had been uncertain who the Roof Master was in this hall and couldn't formally request entry, she doubted these folk even bothered with such courtesy redgardless. The other man who had barged in at the noise the bandit had been making had told them to only take what they needed, so she had left her pack but had been sure to bring her tool kit as well, as she suspected they would be sent beyond the settlement and into the Woods, and only the gods knew what they would need in those shadows. The town's chief was too bright and cheerful for this place, so she assumed it was a mask like the ones the spirits wore, something to mislead and lie, possibly to ensure these warriors he had hired did not simply leave him to the mercy of the Dark. the Barbarian rifle woman looked around at the building they were in, a touch sadly, it was all this that would kill them, trying to carve out a permanent fixture had killed so many, if he was a worthy cheiften he would keep moving, avoiding the Dark's attentions and help his people that way. But now, "civilization"just had to tie everything down and leave their mark upon it, deaths and suffering be dammed. She who walks with thunder kept a firm grip on her rifle, and waited for more details to emerge from behind the mayor's mask.

Between the Mayor's eccentricity, magic paper and a "Wolf" at the table - although he had been kind enough to save Sorelia from the food in front of her, a loss she'd make up for by eating from her own supplies - Settletown seemed to have problems beyond the creatures hiding in the dark. What kind of meat melts? She knew deer. Not the taste, but the animal. She knew it was not a creature of wax.
What kind of meat melts?
"Eat what you can when you can." Iulius was saying now, taking another bowlful. "You never know what or when your next meal will be."
Well. He wasn't wrong. With a sigh of resignation, Sorelia began eating the bread, simply trying to force it down her throat before the taste could kick in. She was not successful. Well, at least the rations will last another day.
In a spare moment between the Mayor's heightened ramblings, she chanced a quick look at... Wait, what was her name? She who... something. Lightning? Storms? The name evaded her, but that didn't matter. You didn't need to know someone's name to look at them. The tribal woman was quiet, keeping herself to herself. She didn't look happy, nor any more displeased than - well, than usual if Sorelia was honest. She hadn't looked happy when they met; she hadn't smiled even once on the trip. You might have thought she'd enjoy the fight they got into, but once again a smile was lacking. Either she was even more out of her comfort zone than Sorelia, or she just had far too serious a disposition. Regardless, there would be little point starting a conversation about it. Then she saw it. The critical eye, just for a moment, hovering over the mayor. The same eye she'd cast herself a minute or so back. Then it was gone, and she was looking around the building instead.
Then they were talking about executing a man. The prisoner. Jakobe? Yes, that was it. Iulius wanted him dead. Milo wanted to give him redemption. Once again, Sorelia found herself siding with him. She knew that softness would probably get her killed one day.
'He's just...' She paused. She didn't have the words. "Insane" made the man sound dangerous. She didn't believe he was. Not now. Yet, what else was there to call him? 'Lost.' She decided. 'He's lost. His family is dead, and that was all he had. That and the - well, you know.' She gestured as if to be writing on a piece of paper, hoping that would get the message across. She had no idea how far, if at all, the news had spread, but regardless she knew she should be careful with it. 'For what it's worth, I don't think there's any reason to kill him.'

The Mayor chuckled at Iuliuses aggressive methods, as Jakobe, just simply scooted further away from him. He was clearly back within his right mind, if not much quieter, and having hardly touched his own portion of breakfast.
“Not to put down your religion Tribune Iulius, but we, ah, dont execute unless necessary.”
suddenly, out of nowhere, a hand, Mr.Grimms, was on Jakobes shoulder, holding him in place.
“However his...Melt down last night, has lead us to believe he knows how to read those....dark scrolls, we sometimes find, and we would be most grateful if he would reveal the methods for reading them, wouldn't we Mr.Grimm?” the Mayor smiled ever cheerfully up at the big man.
“Id prefer not to smash his brains over this yes.”
a moment of silence, fear evident in Jakobes face, a Lack of compassion in Grimms.
Suddenly, Jakobe broke, sobbing, spoke.
“You- you need these crystals! Black, so black that they seem to eat all light! my...my comrades had them! But- But theres more then one set of Crystals, not really a set, you just need any two!”
Jakobe, suddenly jumped up, Mr.Grimm letting him, although his hand stayed on his shoulder.
“But please, dont use them! You..you have to put them into your eyes and....they allow you to see and...and hear things...things no man should....its...its horrible....i...the effects are permanent....they....
….they talk to me in my dreams...and ive...ive woken up with injuries they caused me in my dreams on my body....”
silence filled the room, until the Mayor nodded, and Mr.Grimm let go of him, going back to his seat.
“Thank you for the information my dear child, your free to go. If you stay though, im afraid we will have to make you earn you keep.”
Turning to everyone, the Mayor happily slapped his hands together. “now, im afraid Breakfast is coming to a close. Now that thats all sorted out, any questions for little old me?”

“Well then, if everyone is done with this wonderful breakfast, im afraid its time to get down to business.” Clearing his throat, Mayor Jenkins stood up, his smile, for once, turning into a slight frown, as he rested his hands clasped behind his back. “We have a tradition here, Grimms idea more then mine, where all new recruits agree on a single mission we need done out in the woods, and are sent away to accomplish it. Sorta our way of seeing who is truly worth their paycheck.” Pulling out a scroll, he unrolled it for all to see, placing down little black markers on certain locations. “now, our current Intel gives us a few things we need done- North West:: > it is suspected a tribe of primitive, but possibly intelligent barbaric beasts lives here, and need to be wiped out, as they have been preying on those who enter the forest. South West:: >strange things have been seen here. Eyes, like that of pure lighting, accompanied by a voice so horrible the ears bleed. Wee need to find out whats going on,and eliminate it. South East:: a terrifying monster of unimaginable size has claimed a cave in this area as its home. It must be killed. A bonus of a LordsShare will be given to each if you bring its hide back. NorthEast: Northernmost > a strange set of stairs has been found in the middle of the forest. We lost a good man when he stumbled into it, and another when a brave soul went down to retrieve the body. Find out where this strange stairway leads. Easternmost > a strange statue of some horrible god stands tall here. Take hammers and remove it, for the black fog oozing from it only draws worse things into this forest. Southernmost > many a man has claimed to see a massive castle, standing taller then the trees in this area, and yet no man sent has found it...when they come back at all. Find out what truth is to these rumors. “ standing back up straight, the Mayor nodding slightly. “Ill give you a moment to decide among yourselves.”

"In my humblest of opinions, I think that dealing with the tribe of beasts would probably be the ea... I mean sanest choice." the intrepid Milo said with a grin, "Everything else sounds a bit too much like one of the many bedtime stories my mother would tell me and I am not one for finding out if they are true without preparation."
Milo looked at the new addition for a few seconds, "Besides we may have some members of our group who would enjoy communicating with this tribe. If they are actually intelligent then there's a chance for some sort of diplomatic solution that doesn't involve getting turned into something like what we had for breakfast." With a quick glance at the mayor, "You're in politics and diplomacy, maybe you would appreciate more friends in these woods should they be capable of becoming so and if not, well then Tribune Iulius probably has a plethora of knowledge when it comes to speaking in terms they can understand."

Iulius consulted the map thoughtfully for a moment before he turned to the others, "I agree Milo, best to start with what we can comprehend. If they can be negotiated with allies are always useful, if they can't, well you lot could use the weapons practice." He summarized grimly.

She who walks with thunder felt a sudden moment of white hot rage when the mayor mentioned the first of the tasks he wished them to perform, ah yes, the "civilized" way of dealing with a people too different and in a place they wanted. She could not trust the mayor's words, so often these murders the intruders claimed were accidents of the Dark, or the locals defending what was theirs or any number or reasons. quietly she removed her hat and kissed it. "Walk with the Ancestors, Father." she whispered in her people's tongue, a quiet, but harsh sounding language"May the Shadows never find your footprints in the beyond." It was possible the mayor was telling the truth and the beast-tribe attacked first and did so because of some inner savagery however, The barbarian reluctantly admitted, returning her hat to her head, so caution on behalf of the group would be best, and compared to the rest of the jobs it seemed the one least likely to result in death. Again she cursed civilization need to claim everything with a fixed settlement, it they were her people they would have left this area at the first sign of Dark. She leaned over the table to look at the parchment, curious despite herself, how did the paper know how to show the land? How did these others know that it did? "my people have- Had, A saying." she said in the common tongue after a moment, "Best to avoid bloodshed than to invite Dark into your tent." I believe peaceful contact should at least be attempted, perhaps this tribe is known to me."

After licking the bowl of grub clean, Wolf casually dropped it on the floor without a care in the world. The mess across his face was wiped off on the back off his arm, dirtying the sleeve of his shirt. He sniffed habitually. Only now did he seem to start paying the others any real attention, and he stared hard at each one in turn as they spoke. He listened intently as they talked about investigating the primitive tribe.
That does sound like the safest option... maybe we won't have to kill anyone this time... Shut it. It sounds BORING. I came here to hunt prey... stronger prey... some kind of monster in a cave he says, yes... YES. I SHALL KILL IT. Patience. It may be too strong - even for us. Quiet you. I'll cut its throat and tear out its eyeballs and wear its teeth around my neck. Be calm. We will kill it. But we will need these others. Remember the journey here? It was more dangerous than any journey we have done before. We cannot slay any monsters if we are dead. We may need to cooperate with these others, deal with this tribe of creatures first. Then the monster dies. Plus we might actually make some friends this time! Grrraghh... I'm not listening to you two any more.
"KILL THE MONSTER," he said abruptly, slamming his dagger down onto the table as emphasis. The surprising sound drew all attention towards him. "Track it to its cave and cut out its heart!" He grinned ravenously, pulling his blade free and idly playing with it as if it were a toy. The grin remained spread across his face.

"Though his table manners leave much to be desired, I agree with Wolf." Garth said. "Monster hunting is a bit of a pastime of mine. And it's been a while since I've gotten the chance to hunt one so supposedly ferocious. Should be fun."
