Fairsprings West Virginia, a small appalachian town that had a few coal mines and a fewer than five hundred people living and working there. Originally founded by a church of mormons before getting booted when the mine companies learned of the coal. It was a healthy community of families who knew their place in life. Work and Family were the pillars that held the place together. Until the slurry dams burst and it swept away miners, trees and houses away but worst it got into every source of water.
Fairsprings was tough though, they bought bottled water from the nearby town as they evacuated, they helped those who wasn’t so lucky find a place to sleep and food to eat. They had men and women, father and mothers, brothers and sisters alike doing their part to clean their town and return life to normal. Too bad it was too much for them and they had to leave. Houses with memories left to be forgotten, the schools decaying, the mines left unworked.
Too bad everything about that ending was a lie, the people never left, they couldn’t, not allowed to. The road out had a bridge and on that bridge were men with guns and tools. Both were used to keep the good folk of Fairsprings in their place. The bridge was blown and a fence erected and signs posted.
“Contaminated Land, Stay away” they warned with the authority of the government. I remember a few talk shows and newscasts about the tragedy of Fairsprings, how collections were formed in both charity and church to help the new refugees to resettled. I honestly wonder where the money, blankets, and food went. Then again I know more of the truth than I should and I probably should quit while I’m ahead.
If only those poor fools behind me know what I do, they wouldn’t accept the job. The paycheck is fake and the job rigged. There isn’t a chance they can collect and I’m going to hell for sending them there.
“ETA 4 minutes before we hit Fairsprings” I announced over the intercom to the crew as the helicopter ran along mountain wall.
