Long ago, humanity was naught but a sub-race of the elves and treated as slaves. It wasn't until the Half-elf Ellaria would give birth to a daughter with the gift of magic, the first human in which magic manifested, would things begin to change. For not only could she wield magic, but she could also gift it to those not of her bloodline. And so it was that mankind would first fight back beneath their first crowned Queen and the noble mages. The war would wage for several years and eventually the elves would be forced to flee back across the sea following the battle of Ravensdown.
It has been several centuries since then and humanities fledgling empire is already making their mark upon the globe. Yet it is not to be, for upon the 600th anniversary of the Empire, the King Zachary is assassinated and without an heir, the bloodline magic fails to fully transfer to the next monarch. The King Ricardo a true mage and distant relative to the former king is crowned but he is a weak born mage and without the successful transfer is unable to fully gift magic, only able to unlock a single power within his chosen, a pale shadow of the former court mages. And as for the perpetrator? The assassin the dastardly Countess Seralia fled, never to be seen again within the Empire, bar the countless paper posters lining the Kingdoms’ streets.
Humanity is severely weakened and it would be foolish of its enemies to not take advantage of this. It has been thirteen years, and already is rumour of the elves return as they seek to reclaim their former land and to once again see humanity under the shackles of slavery. Then to make matters there is a rebellion in the East as the forces under who the empire has named ‘The Bloody Red Queen’ slowly advance upon the capitol.
Mages
True Mage; A true mage, also known as a born mage, is a human mage that is born with magic these are usually through the addition of foreign blood, usually either vampiric or elven. Children born to true mages are only born with magic if the mother is a mage, due to claiming a small part of the mothers’ magical power upon birth, this has led to female line inheritance in most noble lines.
Upon the death of a true mage, the remainder of their magic is then transferred to their heir. This transfer of such magic usually leads to a large loss of power especially in the cases of a traumatic death. Therefore, without the addition of more born mage blood within a bloodline such magic won’t usually persist within a family past the second or third generation. True mages are therefore extremely rare in the modern, and new magical lines are near non-existent due to humanities severe xenophobia, as such there have been few documented true mages since the first Queen, as even with the mixed races magic is rare to manifest with the presence of human blood. The first true mage in a bloodline however is always immensely powerful.
Gifted Mage; The gifted mage are those towards which are tied to their monarch. Whom of which has been gifted a small amount of their power. The strength of the mage is therefore tied directly towards the strength of the monarch, because of this the modern court mages rarely number above twenty. Usually there are only around twelve gifted mages within the Empire when not in times of war. Upon the lieges death the magic will then abandon its host, and will have to be re-gifted by the next heir.

OK, so for those of you still reading after a discussion on Skype I've once again decided to try my hand at GMing (I blame dark). This is obviously still under development and a whiles off yet, with everything subject to change. Just posting my thoughts now to check for interest and ask for some help in designing this world. So please feel free to comment on what I have so far as well as post content to help develop this new world.
