I recently had a fun little idea for a community project that some of us could work on, being the gigantic 40k nerds that we are. The idea is that we create a space marine chapter entirely from scratch, decide on all of the details and write all of its background as well as its prominent characters, partly for the fun of it and partly because I think we could use it in the future in some form of RP or even a number of RPs. Who knows?!
Anyway, a few things we'll need to decide on:
- which legion the chapter is founded from. - whether they are codex adherents or if they aren't (Personally I think non-codex adhering would be more fun as it completely opens up the options to us to create something very unique) - any geneseed quirks or side effects.
And so forth. Feel free to add more ideas.
I also think that everyone who works on this should at least be able to have one entire company for themselves to flesh out the background and characters for, to really personalize that part of the chapter. That will, of course, be later down the line.
I'm thinking a good five or six of us working together could come up with a very interesting chapter.
So, I figure the best way to start this off is with a poll to decide which legion and primarch they are descended from. Obviously we should also discuss it - the poll is more just a visual guide - as I expect various people will have various different ideas, but eventually we'll be able to agree I'm sure.
If you are interested in being a part of this project from start to finish (however long that may take, there's no rush) then let me know below. Also, once you vote, explain your reasons for why you think your choice would be the most fun for this project.

Voted, looks like its unanimously in favour of the mighty XIII Smurfs I mean... technically you're not wrong there! Why did you choose the smurfs?

Voted, looks like its unanimously in favour of the mighty XIII Smurfs I mean... technically you're not wrong there! Why did you choose the smurfs? Flexibility. Other legions have specific genetic malfunctions and traits which their successors share. For example, Imperial Fists lack Betchers glands, Sallies the black skin, Raven Guard white, Space Wolves canonically cannot have successors due to the way their geneseed works, Dark Angels their secretive secrety secrets. Ultramarines have no genetic traits to worry about and the most successors. It gives the most flexibility in terms of history and traits of the chapter. For example, nearly all Blood Angel descendants are defined by how they deal with the Red Thirst and Black Rage, and Dark Angels are just a unified legion of successors operating independently until the Fallen arise. It just gives us more scope to write some wacky or unique lore and tactics.

However, if we did choose for the chapter to be descended from a flawed legion, it would also open up some unique possibilities as each of them has an interesting mindset and doctrine that could be adapted in fun ways, potentially.

I chose imperial fists because they don't have a static home base, much like we're all from different places.
Also they wear yellow and yellow is a nifty armor color.

I wanted to vote Raven Guard mainly because space marine ninjas are fucking cool.
Also because they could literally be called the "Darkstormers" and nothing would be amiss.
But I voted for the smurfs because that's just sensible. The other sensible choice is the Imperial fists but they're a bunch of uptight no fun-ers...even more so than the smurfs.
If we DO go with the smurfs as a founding legion...we have an excellent chance to make an Ultramarine descendant chapter that actively says fuck off to the codex...the possibility of which makes me giggle.

You raise a good point. In all honesty I had a feeling it would probably come down to the Ultramarines in the end, but nonetheless, it was worth considering all options. So at this point I'm going to close the poll and rule that we're going to make an Ultramarines descendant chapter. Now we can start discussing some ideas.

Once upon a time I would have been sickened at the thought of a Darkstorm Space Mairne chapter choosing to be Ultramarines successors beyond all others, but the lore behind the ultramarines (discarding their horrible case of plot armor of course) actually makes them one of the most agreeable factions in 40k. After all, Ultramar exists separate of the imperium, with it's own (much more forgiving) laws and regulations. That alone gets them in my good book. Just wish their toliet seat symbol would get retconned, oh well.
With that in mind, I submit the follow piece of lore.
