Hello everyone just posting an idea of what I have for a one-time game session world.
The setting:
Saint Ollithel Island: An island distant from the coast of the Kingdom of Gurrel, the island had for most recorded history been surrounded by terrible storms. Adventurers have sailed to the island in the past but have never returned with any news. In fact, the island had been mostly forgotten due to this nature and written off as utterly and unfathomably useless. At least it was until an adventuring captain said he returned from the island with the entire crew corroborating the story. Saying that the island was filled with lush jungle filled with apes and beaches littered with shipwrecks as well as resonating roars coming from deeper in the jungles. A single lone mountain, believed to be a long dormant volcano from tales of yore, dominates the landscape of the emerald-green jungles and pink sand beaches. The Kingdom of Gurrel's atmomancers determined that the distant tint on the horizon caused by the storms had dissipated and sent a small fleet of exploratory vessels to finally revisit the island after hundreds of years of solitude. The explorers found the island to open and welcoming, at least on the coasts. The interior of jungle had allowed adventurers in, survivors detailed ancient beasts lurking in the trees, caves, and grottos dotted all across the island. More importantly the caves revealed a potential richness in jewels such as sapphire, rubies, and emeralds. An island fresh and ready for exploitation for anyone willing to pay the costs.
Who is Saint Ollithel: Saint Ollithel was sainted after miraculously curing the entirety of the Kingdom of Gurrel and it's southern neighbor, the Kingdom of Soh. This cure allowed the two kingdoms to establish a peace between them instead of requiring the two to constantly attack the other in order to claim more villages with healthy peasants from each other. After this peace was established, Saint Ollithel sought to continue his work to develop a panacea that would prevent any future wars caused due to illness. The nature of the plague, the peace between the two kingdoms, and the exact reason for Saint Ollithel leaving the mainland to go to this remote island are vague and get increasingly so every decade. All that is known is that Saint Ollithel went to the island, it is presumed that he lived on the island after surviving the storms surrounding the island. The less faithful state that he died on the way but was at least trying to benefit others in doing so unlike the others who died for themselves and their own riches.
Why you're here:
The Kingdom of Gurrel readily realized that the potential cost of permanently settling the island and shipping gems from the island to the mainland was a risk and liability. Instead, it sought to immediately profit from the discovery of the richness of the island by selling Marks of Colonization for parcels of the island. 25 years later, the Kingdom has reaped the reward of multiple companies and groups buying these marks and then also from the tariffs imposed on bringing the jewels into Gurrelen ports, as mandated by the Marks of Colonization. You, a plucky adventurer, have decided to seek fortune on the island after hearing about the potential for not only finding a rich vein of jewels for some company, but also for the potential of owning your own share of the finite land space of the island. After all, the Marks for the jungle interior are incredibly cheap as the owners typically end up missing or willingly reselling the Marks back to the Kingdom of Gurrel, maybe you'll be different?
Who else is there:
The Order of the Blazing Rose: While named like a knightly order, there is nothing particularly knightly about the organization as it is actually just an adventuring guild for the atrociously rich or influential. The Order has purchased a Mark and created a nice palatial mansion on the island, selling ventures to the island estate for thousands of gold for just the boat ride. The mansion is surrounded by high walls, with servant quarters in their own little picket outside of the main walls with a farm and small pasture to provide local sustenance for the Order members living inside the mansion. Unfortunately, the Order has had an issue keeping servants on the island as they keep trying to seek their own fortune in the jungles and end up as food for the apes or whatever creatures roam the interior. They are located on the South-East coast of the island.
Dazzlers Incorporated: What better group to exploit caves filled with riches than people who naturally live in caves and are willing to work with the honorable and equally greedy? Dazzlers Incorporated is a predominantly dwarven guild searching through the caves and refining the gems on the island in their walled colony of "Ollithel's Beard". They are a welcoming group willing to hire on anyone who wants to delve into the caves and mines to find riches, preferring to stick with in-house jewelers as the tariffs on the refined jewels are much lower compared to the raw gems. Recently they found a large gem, bigger than any dwarf and maybe worth three Marks of Colonization all on its own. If only they could get it out of the cave. The gem is potentially a religious icon for a group of indigenous goblins, the miners are ill equipped to deal with them, and the colony's guards are busy maintaining security of the walls and within the colony. They are located directly to the south of the volcano.
Saint Ollithel's Devoted: A group of religious zealots and researchers inclined to recording the layout of the island as well as the history of Saint Ollithel and his interaction with the island. Many of them believe that Saint Ollithel retired to the island in order to research his life's work on a panacea for the world's many ills. The Devoted ventured deeper into the jungle and the spire of their church is still visible above the canopy of the jungle. Always a secretive group, they haven't had much communication with the other colonies on the beaches. They are located to the south-west of the volcano and in the jungle.
The Di' Inar Consortium: A group of Dark Elves managed to purchase a Mark of colonization on the Northern side of the island, estimations show that they would be closer to the volcano compared to other colonies on the island. They remain a secretive bunch and it is believed that they seek something more than just gems, but instead seek to create an enclave within the cave complexes of the island in an attempt to take over the island in it's entirety. Others say that this idea is preposterous and is just an idea created out of prejudice. The fact that there is a degree of piracy higher than the other routes just seems to be coincidental as the Kingdom of Gurrel does not tend to watch over the northern or western coasts with as much effort as the southern and eastern shores. They are located to the north of the volcano.
Others: As mentioned there are indigenous goblins on the island. How they got there are unknown to many as history only says that the island has been storms surrounding it since the dawn of time itself. Apes and other large mammals inhabit the island as well as reports of dinosaurs. If Saint Ollithel did make it to the island itself, it is doubtful he would have survived these creatures.
++++++++++The Group++++++++++
The group will consist of players and will involve one of two scenarios, a social or combat oriented scenario in order to test though the setting as well as to try out my skills at trying to run a game.
Please don't expect too much from me or this game, as I do intend it to be short.
