When I was still quite the novice to the game I was disappointed to find out I couldn't trap a Tarrasque in a bag of holding and launch it at people. Luckily my GM was a friend and decided to just tell me that instead of letting me experiment with that. trying it out would have been funnier.

Luckily my GM was a friend and decided to just tell me that instead of letting me experiment with that. trying it out would have been funnier. Well I had an idea of just kind of having it charge in our direction and then trying to use a really big pit with a stretched out bag of holding at the bottom, there would be something that a person could run across but that would break under the Tarrasque.

Our barbarian threw my rogue through a portal once, "detect trap" he said as he did so. That's the first D&D story I've laughed at in a while, thanks. In other news, I've found a local group that was interested in doing a 40k RPG. They needed more players and a little guidance so I was happy to provide both. I convinced the GM to run an Only War game for our group. Anyone interested in hearing the exploits of the Cadian 77th Armored Regiment? Yeah. Tanks. That also may be my fault.

Have I told you about the Rogue Trader group that made me super fucking mad? Like super incredibly fucking upset? Know what, just thinking about it is upsetting me so here's a picture I found that makes me thankful for this election cycle and it's shenanigans. Look at Chris Christie and Trump! Look at them! Fat guardsman with a donut, GUARDSMAN WITH A DONUT!

So...Full Disclosure time: I've retreated from the site and skype a bit as I've told a few of you to focus on that pesky thing we call a "life." These past several weeks I've been trying to get my head on straight and get my priorities in order while also realizing that I've let my social life go down the toilet in the past few years. SO. I went out and found some people at a local TBS Comic shop that were trying to get a 40k rpg group together. Awesome! says I, my past experience with Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, and Only War should serve me well in such a venture.
So this group has lots of variance to it. Some of them, like me, have been 40k fanboys for a while, one of them actually has an army of minis. A couple, though, are newbies to the setting but all of us have played a tabletop RPG or two so with that knowledge we were pretty confident that we'd have fun. The main problem in the group is that the GM wanted to run a 40k game but couldn't make up his mind which system to go for as his GMing experience was minimal. So naturally, as an IG fanboy, I had to suggest he run an Only War game. Can't get much simpler than "Guardsman see xeno, guardsman kill xeno, guardsman kill another xeno tomorrow unless commissar shoots him first."
Like I said in my other post, I talked up an armored regiment because of my great love for war machines...Well, fast forward about a week and the next time we met, him and some of the other players decided against my beloved tanks. The GM felt they would be too OP an inappropriate for what he had in mind for a campaign...bummer. They did agree to meet me halfway though! And with that introduction allow me to introduce you to...the 77th Cadian mechanized regiment...AKA the "Ironhearts" (as the group's military history buff it was my job to come up with the regiment's backstory.)
What's mechanized mean, you ask? Well, in military terms it means that all of the infantry units within the regiment get their own APCs to ride around in. In the case of the guard, that means Chimeras...so hey, we technically DO have tanks...they're just infantry tanks.
So with that in mind, our characters in place, our GM finally having a campaign to run and our dice primed, we were ready to dive into our alternate egos as Imperial Guardsmen!
So I guess I'll use this thread to recount the exploits of our squad of intrepid Cadians (The Emperor's Finest!) but first, allow me to introduce you guys to the group I found, there are seven of us in all:
Game Master: Guy named Ken; he's into audio engineering so naturally he's a geek like the rest of us. He feels like he's a bit over his head with GMing but I've done my best to coach him up on the greatest story telling techniques known to the 40k setting.
Don: I actually went to high school with this guy's older brother. He's going to university to become an accountant. He once shot me in the chest point blank during a game of paintball with another group of friends. We've been friends ever since.
Character: Trooper Dax Zigorsky (dat name tho.) Operator. Nerdy type who wears glasses for reading and has a rather skinny and pale frame but is nonetheless a focused trooper. Squad's token smartass. Can drive or fix anything with wheels or treads.
Jen: GM's girlfriend (I know what you're thinking but shut up.) She used to be a volunteer firefighter and wants to be a nurse and loves Game of Thrones. Well, at least she's used to lots of blood then.
Character: Trooper Essa Knightly. Medic (in a case of art imitating life). She's caramel skinned and dark haired. Sports a military haircut and apparently was a champion athlete before coming to the guard. (DEATH BY SNU SNU)
Mike: Don't know this guy but he seems like a good enough sort. Comes off as redneck-y when you first meet him but he loves comics and shit like that. He played D&D once a long time ago but his group disbanded before they got anywhere so he wants to give it another shot.
Character: Trooper Brock Oxley. Heavy Gunner. Squad's token gentle giant. Big guy with big arms who shoots big guns. Probably used to work in a factory or some other tough sounding thing. Likes cigars and has perfect teeth.
Eric: Quiet guy. Owns a Tau army. Drinks 7up like its water. Studying computer programming at the local college. That's all I really know about him.
Character: Trooper Katyana "Kat" Orello. She's a Weapon Specialist for now but Eric is trying to build a sniper. Woman of few words and fewer shots. He was having trouble imagining what the trooper looked like so I showed him that image of a female Cadian...you know the one...and he said he liked that. So apparently our sniper has a pretty tight ponytail and is pretty cute to boot.
Adam: Friend of Eric's. In the same computer programming course at the college. Token Xbox fanboy. Also loves guns. Apparently has a large collection of them.
Character: Trooper Leckie "Crow" DuCreaux (Dew-Crow). Weapon Specialist. The squad's all-rounder and swiss army knife. Carries a plasma gun but can shoot a lot of other special weapons too. He's the squad's smooth talker and woo-er of womenfolk. (I ROLL TO SEDUCE THE BARMAID.)
And then lastly you have me...you guys know me...right?
Character: First Sergeant Jak Hayden. Squad lead (Sergeant obviously). Squad old timer (At an impressive 31 years of age). Its his job to look after all these youngsters and make sure if they die then they do it in the best way to serve the God Emperor and the Imperial Guard.
And that's about it...OH WAIT. I FORGOT THE LAST CHARACHTER. Our ride, an autocannon bearing Chimera troop transport that has been dubbed "Boxie" by Jen. I'm sure if the thing's machine spirit had blood or cheeks it'd be blushing something fierce.
Anyway, that's we seven. Ready to do or die for Emperor and Imperium and maybe pick up (I.E. steal) a few fancy trinkets along the way. If you guys are interested at all I'll go ahead and post some sort of write up about the first session soon...gotta make up for my lack of participation on the site somehow, eh?

As long as your GM doesn't try to "fix" anything along your game it should be good. Rogue Trader group had very limited knowledge of the 40k universe save for a space marine fanboy.
Landing on a fortress world unmolested by the PDF or any Guard regiments, having an inquisitor on board at all times, and his explanations were BS.
"Oh, the rolls say they criticalled the chaos vessel so much that it's warp drive tore a hole in the immaterium, so I deus ex machina'd an inquisitor and alpha level psyker to close it up"
"Oh the crew's astropath doesn't know its an alpha level psyker because the psyker is concealing their energy. And no the astropath can't do that because I said so"

As long as your GM doesn't try to "fix" anything along your game it should be good. I've noted that of all the 40k systems, groups who run Rogue Trader games seem to have the most difficulties. I've concluded that its because of the game system's massive scope...Really big powers at work = Really big fuck ups if the GM isn't careful. That's why I suggested OW to our GM...The characters get some sense of empowerment because they're xenos killin, heretic murderin, Emperor fearin guardsmen unlike in Dark Heresy where you start off as a total scrub...and the scope of the game is usually just down to the squad vs squad level instead of the planetary scope of Rogue Trader. Everybody wins! Well...except for the xenos and heretics.
