Alex was called and approached the starting line, at the sound of the buzzer he trotted forwards. The crowd wasn't impressed with his performance, but kept watching as he kept pace with the course time and passed each test with increasing ease. He jumped down from the second wall with an incredibly smug look on his face as he stared down Arthur. Things went into slow motion for Alex, he could almost see each individual tendril of water coming from the hose's nozzle. With a grunt he leapt quickly to the side and to the surprise of everyone, the water hit an empty wall and a still very dry Alex stood triumphant in front of the crowd and the soaking wet bench. "Ta-da" the wolf said as the crowd cheered, "ALEX, ALEX, ALEX!" they chanted as the man ate up the attention.
"Take a seat, you beat a hose, not some mob boss." Arthur grumbled as he turned around and checked the remaining pressure on the water outlet attached to the wall. It took a few minutes for the crowd to return to normal as Arthur prepared the hose for yet another round of splashing. "Wolf, Anton".
Anton readied himself, confident in his abilities to perform. The crowd sat amused as he set a decent pace through the sprint and placed several great shots on target. The crowd clapped as he hurried atop the first rope climb and watched as he continued with good skills in the other components of the test. As he landed from the second climb he tried a quic roll to the side to avoid the water, unfortunately the low posture allowed him to take water across the broader surface of his shoulders and chest. He slipped a little coming out of his rolling dodge, but quickly got up and jogged towards the bench and took a seat next to the still dry Alex. "The trick is to not get hit by the water." Alex chided. "I see that." Anton replied in a serious tone.
Sandra was called next, still remembering what one officer had said to her earlier. She shrugged it off as the buzzer cleared everything except for the course from her mind. Her academy training paid off as she pulled through the sprint and tried to squeeze off as many rounds as possible, her sacrifice of aiming time allowed a couple of shots to stray off target and only landed in the circle. She climbed the rope as well as she expected too and for the second round of shooting she allowed herself some extra time, it paid off and all of her shots landed close together on the target. While it wasn't a bulls eye, she was happy with the tight grouping. As she grabbed onto the slick rope, she began to slip. She thought about the seconds being wasted as she managed to regain her grip, she thought about the job that she wanted so much so that she could take care of her daughter. With a final burst of energy she lept from the wall and landed with efficient footing to try to lunge out of the way of the water. Unfortunately she was hit and fell to her knees as she swore under her breath. She stood up, shirt clinging tightly to her chest as she made her way towards the bench. All she hoped for was a passing review from her performance.
They waited for the rest of the cadets to finish, Alex remained as the only cadet still dry after Arthur's course, April had set a new academy record for the sprint, and Victoria had shot in a way most thought impossible during the stress of the obstacle course. Most were relieved as they were huddled into a smaller room and told that they had passed. The clean pressed uniform of their new ranks were handed to them along with their badge and accouterments and a group photo arranged after they had changed into their dark blue uniforms. Some faces were stern and others held a slight glimpse of excitement, others seemed relieved to finally be a part of the department. All that was left was their partner assignments, they sat waiting in another room with a large blackboard for this portion. After a decent 45 minutes Arthur came back with another clipboard and picked up a piece of chalk and placed it on the blackboard's surface. He stared at the board "I'm going to write your partnerships and your car numbers on this board." if you have any complaints you can take it up with HR, but I feel that these are for your best.
With that he slowly wrote out the first name; Sandra Whitehall, then the second name; Victoria Summers, then he wrote Car 79. The list was quickly followed with the rest of the names. Anton Wolf and Morgan Fisher in car 43, Matt DeBohun and April Graves in car 99, Favro and Valeriya Ozerov in car 13, and finally Alex Thorne and Cade Harlock in car 98.
"I suggest you lot exchange numbers so you can get in touch later on." Arthur began as he turned back towards the group, "You want your partnership to be tight so you both can rely on each other and you lot are lucky, we have a department wide outing in a few days. We get to attend a royal wedding, well not royal but the mayor's daughter is getting hitched so we get to be there to make sure everything goes by without a hitch."
"Why do we need to be there for just a wedding?" Valeriya asked.
"Because the mayor's daughter is human and she's marrying some wolf from Northpoint." Arthur began, "Relatively high profile interspecies marriage might upset some people around these parts. So go home, get some rest, tell your loved ones that you're a member of the MRPD now. Then report back here tomorrow for some quick patrol runs and then the day after for the wedding. Congratulations cadets, this might be the last time you ever get to see me because you're full fledged officers now."
