Alex put on his bike helmet as he strode through the precinct's parking lot and mounted his motorcycle. It was an old model Harley Davidson that was made up of a mish mash of worn out parts being replaced by newer ones but still undeniably dated. It did its job though and Alex had put a lot of work and money into it over the years and it had never failed him. The engine cranked on as reliably as ever and soon he was going off down the road in the direction of Northpoint...
Minutes later, he arrived in the driveway of his house. It was a small, shabby thing, one of the many other small, shabby houses within the many Northpoint housing projects. Off in the distance one could see the smokestacks of the factories. The air was heavy with the smell of raw industry; sulfur and metal and coal. This had always been present in the air around Northpoint for as long as Alex had known it and by now he had become so used to it that he barely noticed it anymore. He extended the kickstand of his bike, looking up to notice that his backyard's wooden gate still had a hole near the bottom of it. He would have to get that fixed soon, he said in a mental note to himself. He walked up the steps in his tiny front yard to his front door which was conspicuously lacking a porch of any kind and put his key into the lock to unlock the door. Before he could even open the door fully there was a sudden burst of barking from a small animal within along with the perturbed shout of "Oi!" to go along with it. Alex went inside to find his dingy little hovel still covered in garbage and cluttered junk as it ever was but no sooner had he closed the door than something was pawing at his leg.
Alex looked down to see his Corgi leaning on his leg upon its own hind legs, its stump of a tail wagging furiously.
"Hey there Ein." Alex said as he crouched down to pet the dog. "What have you been up to then?"
An errant scent caught Alex's nose and he looked over in the direction of the offending odor to see a pile of dog droppings in the corner of the linoleum covered kitchen floor. He sighed and stood back up, looking beyond the kitchen counter into the house's den to see a familiar figure perched on the couch in a relaxed position, a game controller in his hand as he stared blankly at the flashing, moving TV screen in front of him.
"Ed, when's the last time you let Ein out?" Alex asked.
"Eh?" Ed responded, the man was large and dark haired but a little on the pudgy side. It was obvious from his casual attire and bed hair that he had just woken up from a nap. "Oh...guess I forgot to." He said, not even looking over at Alex who shook his head and picked up the dog shit with a paper towel and threw it into the garbage can in the kitchen.
"I did remember to feed them though, so there's that." Ed went on as he took a swig from an open can of soda which he put back on the table in front of him as he went on playing his game.
"Well you're learning so there's that." Alex said as he went through the mail that had been piled on the counter. Something small and grey hopped onto the counter next to him and he looked over to see his roommate's Russian Blue rubbing its head on his jacket sleeve and purring.
"Aw what's wrong, princess?" Alex mocked as he rubbed her head with his hand. "Daddy not giving you enough attention?"
"She wanted to bite my arm earlier." Ed said in his defense. "So I threw her off the couch. Fickle little cunt she is."
"And you wonder why she doesn't like you."
"Yeah well..." Ed said, trailing off as he took another sip of his soda. "She started it."
"Where's Rupert?" Alex asked. Ed looked next to him on the couch but didn't find what he was looking for so he began looking about everywhere near him on the ground and under the table.
"He was here a second ago. Hold on." He put his hand under the couch cushion and a second later he brought it back out, holding a brown and white furred ferret that playfully clawed and bit at his hand. "There he is!" Ed announced. "Guy has loved going in there ever since he figured out he could.
"So what'd you get at the store?" Ed asked as he put the ferret down and went back to his videogame.
"What?" Alex asked.
"Weren't you out at the store?"
"No, today was the final exam for the MRPD."
"Oh." Ed said, the realization finally dawning on him. "OOOOHHHH. OH SHIT, THAT WAS TODAY?!" Alex nodded. "Shit man, tell me about it." Ed responded.
"Well, I made the cut." He said sitting next to his roommate and longtime friend on the couch.
"Off the fuckin chain, mate!" Ed said as he put a fist out for Alex to bump with his own which he did with a roll of his eyes. Ed suddenly paused his game and put the controller down. "Hey mate, you got into MRPD and I just got that promotion at work. We should go make a night of it!" He suggested.
"Actually I was gonna meet my new partner at the Half Moon later so we could talk about the job and such." Alex said with a thoughtful nod.
"Fuckin-A, mate, we'll all go. Boy's night out and shit eh?"
"Sure." Alex said, standing up from the couch and going back to the kitchen. "You better bring your own money though because I'm not paying for your drinks again."
The night was young when Alex and Ed arrived at the Half Moon; an authentic pub run by a werewolf immigrant from the UK on the outskirts of Northpoint. There was a sign near the road displaying its name and a headboard over the main door with a painted and carved wooden panel displaying a half moon in the night sky. Alex decided to stand near the door to wait for Cade but Ed decided to stay inside stating that it was "too fucking cold out."
Soon enough though it seemed that Cade had gotten the text. He showed up and made his way over to Alex who shook the young man's hand.
"Don't worry about it." Alex said with a nod. "Night's still young. Come on inside, I'll introduce you to everybody."
Alex led Cade into the well lit interior whose walls were covered with everything from autographed and framed celebrity pictures, to sports memorabilia to old European nick nacks. The pub smelled of freshly baked bread and the spicy scent of whatever seasonal thing they were serving. There were about a dozen patrons within the lobby, all seated at different tables in small groups as they nursed their drinks. Ed was seated alone at one watching one of the pub's TVs while he waited for the other two. Alex sat down next to him and invited Cade to do likewise. Ed turned around and made a face when he saw Cade.
"Mate, you didn't tell me your partner was a vamp." He said. The tone of the statement had been more in confusion than in spite but Alex scowled at him anyway.
"Ed, go get us a couple drinks and quit being an asshole." Alex growled. Ed shrugged and went to go do as he was told. Alex turned back to Cade once he was gone.
"Don't mind him. He works in one of the factories around here and doesn't get outside of Northpoint much." He then checked over his shoulder to make sure Ed wasn't looking. After confirming that he leaned in close to Cade and spoke in a near whisper. "He broke up with some vamp chick a few months ago...Not. Pretty."
After that the conversation went back to a normal tone and Alex sat straight in his chair, keeping the TV in the corner of his eye.
"Don't worry too much about the other guys here either. We're mostly wolves around these parts but we get a vamp here every once in a while. You might get a dirty look or two but they don't mean much by it. The owner's a real nice guy to everyone. So...anyway...What kinda drink do you fancy?"
