Hi there guys, been a while since I've visited but I'm here to throw out an idea I have. Unfortuately, I do not have time for proper roleplaying games anymore between work and uni, a sentence I never wanted to say. However, I do want to do some writing and I'm here to propose my latest story idea.
Years ago I did a game of Deathwatch starring the incredible Killteam Gernhart with a bunch of the older members of the site. While I'm entirely unsure of who among them is still here, I know a great number of them have since left on bad terms, it was always a setting I hoped to return to. So I've decided to revisit my old character from that game, Varus Renzo, and put in in a new fanfiction series I will be posting on this site.
Now, to avoid treading on other members toes, I won't be including other former Gernhart members, except where explicitly asked by the owner for a cameo, although I will be referencing them in my series. Unless explicitly asked for a particular ending by the original owner I will be putting my own ideas into action, and this thread is the place to request such things. Otherwise I will take carte blanche to write as I see fit however most if not all characters will be mentioned, some with glorious deaths and others surviving.
Now, the key about this story is that its a solo effort, entirely my own work. I'm happy to take criticism in this thread but once published its there to stay, no changes for fanservice.
I aim to bring 1 chapter out each week, posted on a Sunday, with the first this weekend. I'm going to write up character profiles for each squad member tomorrow and post here tomorrow.
Hope you guys are excited about this series as I am, particularly the old members of the game, and if anyone still lurks who has left the site, and doesn't want to log on, feel free to shoot me an email to say hi or give feedback; operationzulu506@gmail.com

Interesting idea, I shall be watching how it develops. I always regretted not reaching the end of the story I had planned for Deathwatch.
Will Renzo be in a new setting surrounded by new Deathwatch marines on new adventures while he reminisces? Or perhaps he'll have returned to his chapter? Either way I'm curious to know how much you will be making up off the top of your head with the game gone, all its information and details on locations and NPCs and even the personalities of the other marines wiped except for what we remember ourselves. Nonetheless it will be a fun read I'm sure and it will be nice to see where Renzo ends up.

All questions will be answered in due time In honesty, because a lot of it has been wiped I'm trying to keep most direct references out of the equation. Having said that, if you remember anything to do with the setting (particularly the Watch Fortress we used) then by all means send me information. Glad you're onboard Darkmeister, like I said I'm uploading generic information n this thread tonight and will be posting Chapter 1 this Sunday. If you're still in touch with any of the guys give them a shout as well for me, would you?

Another thing that I'd like to ask - purely from a creative perspective - while Renzo is your character and you know him better than anyone else, why not simply start fresh with a whole new set of supporting characters rather than retread ground? Something like Renzo being transferred away to a different outpost would give you full creative freedom rather than going back over a half-forgotten setting from an ancient game? It seems like you'll be making your own life a lot more difficult that way.
My suggestion would be to have a clean slate, and maybe work on a collaborative fiction with one or two other players from the original game - have a few characters transferred together - and craft a wider story together rather than just have the odd cameo or writing in whatever deaths for others. Of course, do what will be the most fun and bring you the most satisfaction, I'm just offering a focus shift for this project that I think would give you far more room to breathe, so to speak. Getting others involved I understand may not be ideal if you want to have full control, however you seem quite fixated on the involvement of past characters who knew Renzo and to me this seems like the best way to integrate that. I suppose it's something of a roleplay-lite, but as there's no GM, well, you get what I mean I'm sure. That's my two cents.
As for the others who left, no, I am not in contact with any of them.

Cheers man, always 3 steps ahead of me, as usual At risk of giving away too much you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. New setting, but I can't justify having a Deathwatch game with Renzo and not namedrop some characters and stuff from time before. I may consult with people as to what I can do with what amounts to their copyright characters, but in honest I would rather lead the project as a novel of sorts of my own work based off the character, but in honest any appearances of characters would be a few paragraphs at most. Hence when I would have liked to message the old bunch. Any chance you would have their emails on server or something like that?

Your skype account is still in our current group chat and presumably will still have them as contacts. Perhaps log into that and message them if necessary, seems like the simplest way forward rather than giving out (potentially unused) emails.

So just going to say this now, with Darko's permission, I plan to put the story as a seperate thread so that it can all be read linearly without trawling through comments from other people, but I'm more than happy to discuss things here and in fact, of course, encourage it!
So anyway, without further ado, meet the new team! Hope they interest you as there will be some intriguing team dynamics going on. The sharp minded among you also might pick out some interesting setting and background points as well.

Interesting to see you move into the 42nd millennium, I've done the same with my past two 40k games, Shadow War and Black Valkyrie Down. I think it's fun to advance the timeline and imagine what could happen seeing as the canon universe will never pass beyond 999.M41.
